WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest ran through its first scrimmage of the preseason on Thursday at BB&T Field, with the offense stringing together two nice touchdown drives but the defense largely proving dominant.
Lovell Jackson, Justin Jackson and Tyler Jackson all posted good numbers in the 90 minute session. Lovell Jackson caught a team-high four passes for 44 yards, Justin Jackson tied for the team lead with five tackles, and Tyler Jackson led the Deacs in rushing with 36 yards on 12 carries.
Tanner Price completed 10-of-13 passes for 155 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Sherman Ragland III caught two passes for a team-high 56 yards and a touchdown. Orville Reynolds rushed 11 times, picking up 16 yards, including an eight-yard score. Reynolds also caught two passes for 14 yards.
On defense, Merrill Noel and Joey Ehrmann tied Justin Jackson with five tackles, with Ehrmann also recording a sack and two tackles for loss. Nikita Whitlock forced and recovered a fumble, and Scott Betros made the game's only interception. Hunter Williams also forced a fumble that Desmond Cooper recovered.
The first-team offense impressed on the first drive of the scrimmage against the first-team defense marching down the field for a touchdown. Reynolds carried the ball for the bulk of the plays, including the ultimate eight-yard touchdown run, but the Deacons also picked up a chunk of yardage on a 33-yard pass from Price to Ragland.
Price and Ragland later hooked up on the second touchdown of the game, with Price threading the needle between a number of defenders to find Ragland in the end zone for a 24-yard score.
The Deacons will return to practice Friday with two sessions running from 9:45-11 a.m. and 3:15-5:30 p.m.
