Aug. 18, 2012
Wake Forest senior placekicker Jimmy Newman has been named to the preseason Groza Award Watch List. The Oxford, Ala. Native was a semifinalist for the award last year as a junior. Newman enters his final year ranked third in school history with 40 career field goals and fourth with 224 points. He currently holds the school record for consecutive field goals made with 14 which was set during the 2011 season. Newman has led the Deacons in scoring in each of the last three seasons and is currently the most accurate field goal kicker in school history at nearly 77 percent. During his career, Newman has converted 40 of 52 field goal attempts and 104 of 106 PAT opportunities. Newman should challenge to become Wake Forest's all-time leader in PATs as he trails current record-holder Sam Swank by just 20. As a junior, Newman converted 39 of 41 PAT chances and 17 of 22 field goal tries with a long of 46.
