PALM CITY, Fla. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team began play at the Valspar Collegiate with a strong opening round Sunday afternoon at the Floridian. The Demon Deacons shot a 7-over 291 to finish the first round in second place of the event, which features eight of the top 30 teams in the nation.

Texas A&M is the 18-hole leader at 4-over, three shots ahead of the Deacs. North Texas is third at 8-over, while Texas and Houston at tied for fourth at 11-over.

Will Zalatoris finished the opening round tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard after a first round 1-under 70, two shots off the lead. Eric Bae shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 15th place. Cameron Young and Lee Detmer each shot a 3-over 74 and are tied for 21st place, while Paul McBride is tied for 27th place at 4-over.

“It was a long day and the team showed great fight in tough, windy conditions,” said head coach Jerry Haas. “That no teams are under par tells you how tough it was out there. We had very solid play from all five guys. Will and Cam each birdied their last two hole, so that really helped. We will be in the last group tomorrow, which is a positive.”
