CARY, N.C. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team opened play Friday at the Stitch Intercollegiate with first round play at MacGregor Downs. The Demon Deacons shot 6-under during the opening round to finish the day tied for lead with host NC State.

Wake Forest and NC State lead third place UAB (5-under) by one stroke and fourth place Duke (4-under) by two strokes.

“Except for a couple of holes, it was a very solid day,” said head coach Jerry Haas. “We didn’t play No. 11 very well or No. 1, but we hung in there and did some good things. The scores will improve tomorrow as the weather looks great. If we make some adjustments, we have the ability to go low.”

All five Demon Deacons in the lineup shot par or better on Friday, led by Paul McBride’s 3-under 69. He is tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Wake Forest had four players shoot a 1-under 71, as Cameron Young, Eric Bae and Parker Gillam posted the number to round out the scoring four and Brandon Gillis shot 1-under playing as an individual. Lee Detmer rounded out the lineup with an even par 72, while Marco Steyn shot a 73 as an individual.
