COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Wake Forest men’s golf team opened play Monday at the NCAA Columbus Regional with the first round at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. The Demon Deacons are in seventh place after shooting 15-over during the opening round.

The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. Oklahoma State is the 18-hole leader at 3-under. UNLV is in second place at 2-under, followed by Illinois at even par. Northwestern (8-over) and Penn State (9-over) currently hold the final two qualifying spots, just ahead of Texas Tech (13-over) and Wake Forest (15-over).

“We didn’t have the start we wanted today,” said head coach Jerry Haas. “We still have two rounds to move up the leaderboard, but we will need to eliminate some of the mistakes we made today.”

Cameron Young led the Demon Deacons on Monday with a 1-over round of 72. Eric Bae shot a 4-over 75 and Paul McBride and Parker Gillam each posted a 5-over 76. Lee Detmer rounded out the lineup with a 7-over 78.

The NCAA Columbus Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the Scarlet Course.
