TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's golf team posted a round of 8-over 296 on Friday in the second round of the NCAA East Regional at the Golden Eagle Country Club and is now in ninth place in the 13-team field.
Senior Evan Beck made four birdies in his round on Friday and finished with a 1-under 71. Coupled with an opening round 68, Beck is tied for 13th place at 5-under par.
The Demon Deacons entered the second round just four spots behind the fifth qualifying spot. But a 296 dropped them back into ninth place and they are now 16 shots out of fifth place. The top-5 teams and top individual not on those five teams at the end of Saturday's round will earn a spot in the NCAA Championship in Atlanta.
Freshman Davis Womble birdied all four par-5s on Friday en route to posting a 2-over 74. He is tied with teammate Charlie Harrison, who's 76 on Friday also put him at 2-over for the tournament. Womble and Harrison will start the final round in a tie for 39th.
North Florida holds the team lead for the second-straight day after a second round 277. The Osprey are 27-under for the tournament and lead top-seeded Washington by two shots and host Florida State by four shots.
The race for the fourth and fifth spots is a tight one. Oregon is currently in fourth place at 14-under par while Georgia Tech and South Florida are tied for the final qualifying spot just two shots back at 12-under.
Individually, first round leader MJ Maguire of North Florida continues to lead at 11-under par. Maguire followed his opening round 65 with a 68 and holds a one-shot lead over Florida State's Chase Seiffert and Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan.
Wake Forest will begin the final round at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning off the tenth tee. The Deacs are paired with Oklahoma and Oregon State. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final round.
