May 27, 2009 TOLEDO, Ohio - After waiting out a four and a half hour weather delay to start the day, the Wake Forest men's golf team plodded through a tough opening nine and as the horns sounded, the team had slipped to 26th place midway through the second round. Severe weather rolled through the Toledo, Ohio area around noon on Wednesday and put a halt to the second round. The action didn't startup again until after 4:00 pm and the Demon Deacons didn't start their round until 5:40 pm. The wet conditions and thick rough didn't make scoring easy and the Deacs wound-up 12-over midway through the round. Freshman Daniel Meggs, who was the low Deacon in round one, is again leading the way in round two. He started his round with two birdies and two bogeys in the first four holes and would make the turn at 2-over. He got through four holes on his second nine and had made four-straight pars. Senior Dustin Groves and junior Travis Wadkins each made it through 11 holes and both players are 3-over par. Freshman Lee Bedford made a nice birdie at No. 1 to start his round but made five bogeys the rest of the nine and would turn at 4-over 39. He made par at No. 10 and will start Thursday at 4-over par for his round. Junior Brendan Gielow made just four pars in his opening nine and tapped in for 6-over 41 as the horns were sounding. Wake will be up bright and early Thursday as the second round is scheduled to resume at 6:45 am. All 15 teams from the morning wave were able to finish their rounds but nobody from the afternoon wave made it through all 18.
Oklahoma State took advantage of the ideal conditions in the morning before the rain and posted a round of 4-under 280. The Cowboys lead the team standings by five shots over Georgia. Michigan is third at 6-over par as the Wolverines, who were playing this afternoon, are 6-under on their round at the turn. Duke is currently in eighth-place at 14-over midway through its second round. The top eight teams at the end of 54-holes will advance to match-play. The winner of match play will be crowned the 2009 National Champion. In the individual race, San Diego's Alex Ching has a two-shot lead midway through the second round. Ching is 5-under through 11 holes and 6-under overall. He leads three players at 4-under par, including NC State's Matt Hill, who is playing as an individual this week. An individual champion will be crowned at the end of 54-holes. The second round will resume at 6:45 am, Thursday morning and the third round is scheduled to get underway at 10 am.
