ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round 290 to finish tied for sixth at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

Sophomores Daniel Meggs and Lee Bedford each finished the tournament tied for 17th at 1-over par.

"We played pretty solid today but we just struggled getting to the house," said Wake Forest assistant coach Dan Walters. "Overall, this was a good way to start the year and it's definitely a tournament we can build on."

Tennessee posted four rounds under-par on Sunday to card a stunning 13-under 274 and would run away with the team title. The Volunteers won by 12-shots over Chattanooga and 16-shots over ACC-foe Georgia Tech.

The Deacons finished the tournament 11-over par and tied Alabama for sixth place.

After opening with a 6-over 78, Meggs posted back-to-back under-par rounds, including a 1-under 71 on Sunday to tie his career tournament-low at 1-over 217.

Bedford also finished with a 54-hole total of 217 after carding an even-par 72 on Sunday. He opened with rounds of 74-71.

Freshman Evan Beck had a very good first tournament, carding rounds of 71-75-72 to finish at 2-over 218 and tied for 20th. Beck played a solid round on Sunday, making 16 pars, two birdies and two bogeys.

Senior Travis Wadkins made nine-straight pars to start his final round and would finish with a 3-over 75. Coupled with his first two rounds of 76-73, the Dallas, Texas, native finished tied for 40th at 8-over.

Fellow senior Preston Yates had a tough round on Sunday, posting an 85 and finishing the tournament 57th.

In the individual race, Nils Floren of Texas Tech and Darren Renwick of Tennessee tied for medalist honors at 6-under par. Floren carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday while Renwick came in with a 69. Second round lead Russell Henley of Georgia followed-up his 66 on Saturday with a 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 6th.

The Deacons played this week without their senior leader Brendan Gielow as he competed for Team USA in the 2009 Walker Cup matches. Gielow will rejoin the team next weekend at the Olympia Fields/Illini Classic at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago, Ill. The 54-hole tournament will begin on Friday, Sept. 18 and finish-up on Sunday, Sept. 20.
