Bedford's 71 Leads Deacons In Final Round Of Olympia Fields Invite
Sept. 20, 2009 OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Sophomore Lee Bedford carded his second straight 71 to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team in the final round of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club Sunday morning. The Deacons carded a 299 as a team and finished in a tie for 13th. Bedford made a pair of birdies on 15 and 16 and would make the turn at 1-under par. He then made seven pars and two bogeys on the front nine to post his second 71 and would finish tied for 12th at 7-over par. Senior Brendan Gielow also had a good week for the Deacs, finishing tied for 14th at 8-over after posting rounds of 72-74-72=218 (+8). He had an up-and-down first nine on Sunday, making just two pars but still posting a 1-over 36. He then carded a matching 36 on the front nine for his second 72 of the tournament. As a team, Wake struggled to post four rounds on the same day and wound-up finished tied for 13th at a lofty 65-over par. Senior Travis Wadkins carded a 6-over 76 on Sunday and finished tied for 63rd at 23-over. Sophomore Daniel Meggs finished a shot behind Wadkins at 24-over after a final round 81 and Marc Gladson finished off a tough week with a final round 80. Arizona State took the lead after 36 holes and would hold on for a two-shot victory after a final round 293. The Sun Devils were 30-over par for the three rounds, which was two shots better than the top-ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State. Cowboy Trent Whitekiller carded one of three under par rounds on Sunday to finish 1-over for the tournament and tied Georgia's Harris English for medalist honors.
Wake will look to rebound in just over a week as it looks to defend its title at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va. The Deacons won by 16-shots last season behind a career-best 12-under par finish from Gielow. The first two rounds are set Monday, Sept. 28, with the final round on Tuesday. Wake Forest Scores |
