NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team opened play Sunday at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. The Demon Deacons shot a 4-under 280 during the opening round and are in seventh place after 18 holes.

Reigning NCAA Champion Oklahoma leads the elite field at 12-under, with Stanford in second at 10-under.

“We fought through the rain and cold conditions early as the weather turned beautiful later in the day,” said head coach Jerry Haas. “I am very proud with the way these guys hung in there and we had everyone birdie the last hole. We knew the scores would be good going into the round, so we know we have to have two really solid days to run with the leaders. We are more than capable of doing that.”

Cameron Young played a bogey-free 5-under 66 to lead the Demon Deacons during the opening round, ending the day tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Will Zalatoris also shot under par with a 3-under 68 to end the round T-13th. Eric Bae and Paul McBride each shot a 2-over 73, while Marco Steyn rounded out the lineup with a 75.

The tournament continues Monday and concludes Tuesday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
