PINEHURST, N.C. - All four of the morning four-ball matches at the Payne Stewart Match Play were coming down to the wire but heavy rains in the Pinehurst, N.C. area put a halt to the action.

Three of the four matches were all square, with the lead match on the 17th green. SMU had a slim 1-up lead in the other match but Wake Forest had a 10-foot birdie putt to win the hole.

The matches got underway Monday morning at Pinehurst No. 2 in cool and breezy conditions. SMU took the early lead in all four matches but by the turn, the Deacs had evened two matches and had taken a lead in another.

When the lead group had gotten to the 13th tee, the rain started and after about an hour, the greens had become unplayable. The rain never really letup and the coaches decided to cancel the match.

The Demon Deacons won't have long to wait as they will get back to action this weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges. The 54-hole event runs Friday through Sunday.
