JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - In cold and wet conditions, sophomore Daniel Meggs ties his career-low with a 4-under 68 to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team in the opening round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges Country Club (par 72, 7,147 yards).

As a team, the Deacons carded a very good round of 2-over 290 and stand in a five-way tie for fourth. Oregon State fired a 2-under 286 and led by one shot over Tennessee and Missouri who each finished at 1-under.

"I think that was one of the better rounds we played all year," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We didn't have a very good draw as it was rainy and cold and being the last group out, it got colder as the day went on. So I thought our guys hung in there well and I think we're in a good spot heading into the weekend."

Meggs made three birdies and one bogey to go out in 2-under 34. He then birdied both 10 and 11 to get to 4-under on the day and was just a shot off the lead through 12 holes. He birdied the par-5 14th to get to 5-under and would card his only bogey on the back nine at No. 17 to finish with a 4-under 68.

This is the second time this season that Meggs has shot a 68 as he also turned the trick in the second round of the Carpet Capital Classic. He will start the round on Saturday tied for second.

Senior Brendan Gielow also had a good round on Friday, carding an even-par 72. He made the turn at 1-over after a double-bogey on No. 7 and a birdie at No. 8. He fell to 2-over after a bogey at No. 12 but bounced-back with birdies at both 13 and 14 to get back to even par. The Muskegon, Mich., native then counted a bogey at No. 15 with a good birdie at the tough par-4 17th to finish even on the day.

Both freshman Evan Beck and sophomore Lee Bedford carded rounds of 3-over 75 on Friday. Beck had a total of two birdies on the day while Bedford tallied three. The duo will start the second round tied for 40th

Travis Wadkins made two birdies in his round on Friday and would go on to shoot a 5-over 77. He birdied the first hole of the day and was 1-under through six. But he played the next six holes at 5-over par to fall to 4-over through 12. He then regrouped and made five pars and just one bogey to finish. Wadkins will start the second round tied for 61st.

Freshman Charlie Harrison is playing in his second career tournament as an individual this week. He made the turn at just 3-over but would go on to card an opening round 81.

Oregon State's Diego Velasquez made a total of eight birdies on the day and leads the individual race by two shots after an opening round 66. Meggs and Duke's Wes Roach are tied for second at 4-under while UNC Wilmington's Justin Brock is fourth at 3-under.

The weather forecast will not be favorable again on Saturday as temperatures are not expected to be above 45 degrees with a chance of rain. Wake will start the second round at 11:20 am and is paired with Virginia and Virginia Tech. Live scoring of the final two rounds can be found at www.golfstat.com.
