HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FL - Wake Forest won four of five matches to beat Coastal Carolina for fifth place in the 16-team Collegiate Match Play Championship here Sunday.
The 11th-ranked Demon Deacons finish the tournament, which included a field of many of the nation's top teams, with a 3-1 record with wins over Augusta State, Tennessee and Coastal Carolina. The only blemish during the weekend was a second-round loss to Arizona.
Senior Kyle Reifers won his match today 4 and 2 over Joachim Fourquet. Senior Doug Manchester continued his solid play in the fall season with a 3 and 2 victory over Cameron Hooper. Sophomore Chris McCartin ended the fall season on a positive note by beating Justin Smith 2-up. Junior Sean Moore won the 19th hole to beat Moises Cobo. Sophomore Webb Simpson was the only Deacon to fall short today, falling 4 and 2 to Zack Byrd.
For the tournament, Reifers produced a record of 3-0-1 and Manchester went 3-1.
Georgia, the defending NCAA champion and the nation's top-ranked team, beat Georgia Tech in the finals. Stanford topped Arizona for third place.
The fall season is over for Wake Forest, with the exception of Reifers, who will participate in the All-America Classic Nov. 20-22.
