Sept. 4, 2009 Complete Top-50 Players To Watch List WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Brendan Gielow was named to the Golf World Top-50 Players To Watch in 2009 List on Friday. The NGCA and Gold World also released the preseason coaches poll on Friday, which slotted the Wake Forest men's golf team at No. 27 to start the season. This is the second-straight season the Muskegon, Mich., native has been on the preseason Watch List. Last year, Gielow finished second on the team with a 73.0 stroke average and claimed the Deacons' only individual victory at the VCU Shootout after firing a career-low 12-under par. Gielow had a tremendous summer, winning the Porter Cup and finishing in the top-10 at the Sunnehanna Amateur, the Northeast Amateur and the Southern Amateur. He also finished tied for 12th at the Monroe Invitational in mid-June. Last summer, the Muskegon, Mich., native won the Northeast Amateur in record fashion and was the Medalist in his U.S. Amateur qualifying to go along with a tenth-place finish at the Porter Cup. Gielow was rewarded for his solid play over the last two years by being selected to represent the United States in this year's Walker Cup, which is being played at Merion Country Club on Sept. 12-13. As a team, the Demon Deacons received a total of 64 votes which puts them 27th in the Golf World preseason poll. Wake has advanced to the NCAA Championships eight out of the last nine years including five-straight. Gielow heads a strong lineup that includes fellow seniors Marc Gladson, Travis Wadkins and Preston Yates along with sophomores Lee Bedford and Daniel Meggs. The addition of freshmen Evan Beck and Charlie Harrison should also bring depth to the team as well.
Wake opens the season on Friday, Sept.11, at the Carpet Capital Classic in Rocky Face, Ga. The Deacs will then head to Olympia Fields the following weekend for the Illini Classic before playing their third tournament in consecutive weekends as they try to defend their title at the VCU Shootout on Sept. 28-29.
