GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 2-ranked Wake Forest opened up the exhibition portion of its schedule with a 1-0 loss to Furman at Stone Soccer Stadium on Sunday night.

A 25th-minute goal was the difference in the game for the Paladins, as Josiah Baker scored on a give-and-go from Cole McLagan on Furman's first shot of the evening.

"Overall you never want to lose, but we got what we wanted from the game," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We played two even groups and got everyone on the roster some good experience against a good Furman team and managed our training load. I'm excited to get back to work with this group after seeing a lot of exciting things tonight."

Wake Forest had a possession advantage in the game, out-shooting Furman, 9-6, and also holding a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Bruno Lapa led the Deacs with three shots, while Jon Bakero took a game-high two shots on goal.

A total of 23 different Deacs saw game action, including nine for their first time in Old Gold & Black: redshirt-freshman Michael DeShields and true freshmen Machop Chol, Omir Fernandez, Kyle McCurley, Mark McKenzie, Justin McMaster, Andrew Pannenberg, Dominic Peters and Brandon Servania.

Andreu Cases Mundet, Pannenberg and Peters saw action in goal. Cases Mundet played the first half and conceded a goal on the only shot on goal he faced. Pannenberg made a save in 35 minutes, while Peters did not face a shot on goal in 10 minutes.
