WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 17-ranked Wake Forest dropped its season opener to No. 13 Coastal Carolina 1-0 on Friday night at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons outshot the Chanticleers 12-10 for the game but were unable to find the back of the net. Sean Okoli had a team-high four shots for the Deacs, while Andy Lubahn had three shots - one of which was on goal.

Coastal Carolina scored the game's only goal just before halftime at the 42:01 mark. Ridge Robinson crossed the ball in from the right side, and Matt Risher finished from about six yards out to give the Chanticleers the 1-0 lead.

Alec Ferrell made his debut in goal for Wake Forest, saving four shots. Devin Cook earned the shutout for Coastal Carolina by making two saves.

Not long before Coastal Carolina went on top, the Demon Deacons nearly had a 1-0 lead of their own. Lubahn lined one up from about 20 yards out on the left side and sent it towards goal. Rafael Fagundo redirected the shot, but Cook was able to change directions and get his right hand on the ball for the key save.

All three of Lubahn's chances came in the first 29 minutes of the game, with his best chance being saved by Cook in the 29th minute.

Ferrell and Fagundo were two of seven Demon Deacon players who made their collegiate debuts on Friday night. Others playing in their first game included Ian Harkes, Jacori Hayes, Thomas Haws, Hayden Partain and Tane Gent.

Wake Forest will look to bounce back quickly with Monmouth coming to town for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday night at Spry Stadium. The Hawks lost their season opener 1-0 at North Carolina in double overtime.
