WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 4-ranked Wake Forest earned its first shutout of the season, blanking Appalachian State, 3-0, at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ema Twumasi scored twice for his second-career brace, and the Demon Deacon (5-1-0) defense held the Mountaineers (2-3-1) without a shot or corner kick.

The Deacs held a 9-0 advantage in shots at the break, but headed into halftime scoreless.

The offense kicked in exactly 66 seconds into the second half. After a through ball from Jon Bakero, Twumasi finished inside the left post from the edge of the 18 for what proved to be the game-winner.

He added another score in the 52nd minute. One-touch passes from Bakero (sixth assist of the year) and Brad Dunwell found Twumasi open in front of the net for the far-post finish.

Bruno Lapa added his first goal of the season in the 75th minute. Omir Fernandez pulled the keeper out of net before crossing it in from the right side to Lapa for the tap-in.

Wake Forest out-shot the Mountaineers by an 18-0 margin, marking the first time keeping an opponent without a shot since Sept. 20, 2005, a 5-0 win over Saint Joseph's.

The Deacs also had a 10-0 advantage in corners and 9-0 margin in shots on goal.

Wake Forest returns to action this weekend against Pittsburgh on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. The Deacs will welcome back members of the 2007 National Championship team as part of the Homecoming festivities.
