Syracuse took an early 1-0 lead in the first half as Tyler Hilliard headed in a free kick from Jordan Murrell in the ninth minute. The Orange had another scoring opportunity minutes later but goalkeeper Alec Ferrell made the stop.

Michael Gamble had two shots in the half including a nice scoring opportunity in the 14th minute but was denied by Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono. Jon Bakero had a shot late in the half off created by passes from Hank Gauger and Gamble but it went high shortly before halftime.
