NEWTON, Mass. - Boston College's Kevin Mejia scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 win over No. 2 Wake Forest on Friday night at the Newton Campus Soccer Complex. The Demon Deacons drop to 12-3-2 and 4-2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Boston College improves to 10-7-0 and 4-3-0 in league play. Wake Forest has 13 points in conference play and remains in a tie for first with Maryland and North Carolina. Each team has one conference game remaining in the regular season. Wake had the run of play for much of the match, holding a 15-9 advantage in shots. The Deacs put seven shots on goal, while the Eagles had four shots on frame. Wake Forest had six corner kicks, compared to two for BC. Demon Deacon senior Zack Schilawski attempted a team-high five shots, including two that were on goal. Austin da Luz added three shots, two of which were on frame. Mejia tallied his fourth goal of the season and his second game winner of 2009. Charlie Rugg led Boston College with three shots. Akira Fitzgerald suffered the loss in goal for Wake Forest, allowing one goal and making three saves. Justin Luthy earned his sixth shutout of the season for Boston College, making seven saves in the victory. Wake Forest came out of the gates strong, recording four shots on goal in the first 13 minutes of the match. Schilawski, Luke Norman, Justin Lichtfuss and da Luz each had shots on frame in the opening minutes, but Luthy was able to make the save on each attempt. Boston College started to get its offense on track in the latter stage of the opening half. Kyle Bekker and Jeremiah Gallington were each able to get shots on goal, but Fitzgerald made saves on both shots. The Demon Deacons continued to attack at the start of the second half. Schilawski had a shot that was saved just 31 seconds into the half, while Corben Bone sent a shot wide in the 50th minute. The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead with a goal from Kevin Mejia in the 51st minute. Mejia found the bottom right corner of the net from 23 yards out for his fourth goal of the season. Andy Lubahn nearly tied the game for the Demon Deacons in the 70th minute. Lubahn's header shot hit off the cross bar to keep BC in front 1-0. The Deacs had another scoring chance in the 75th minute. Da Luz had a shot on goal, but Luthy was able to make the save for Boston College. Wake had a chance to equalize in the 87th minute. Opara had a header shot, but Luthy was again there to make the stop. Wake Forest closes the regular season on Friday, November 6, when it plays host to Duke. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Wake's 2009 senior class will be honored in a ceremony before the match.
