GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest junior forward Zack Schilawski was named ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced on Wednesday morning by the league office. Senior midfielder Sam Cronin and junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald joined Schilawski on the All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team.

Schilawski becomes the first Wake Forest men's soccer play to be named ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Cronin and Schilawski were named to the All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team for the third time in their careers, while Fitzgerald was selected for the first time.

A native of Cary, N.C., Schilawski currently has a 3.579 cumulative grade point average with a major in biology. Schilawski was also named a 2008 first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. He finished the 2008 season with 11 goals, which was the third most on the team, and 27 points. Schilawski scored a career-best five points in Wake's victory over Dartmouth in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Cronin, who graduated this past December with a degree in political science, finished his college career with a 3.276 cumulative GPA. A 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honoree, Cronin was honored for his performance on the field, in the classroom and in the community by being named the winner of the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Cronin started all 98 games during his collegiate career and left Wake Forest as the school's career leader in games played and games started. He was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC.

Fitzgerald currently carries a 3.095 GPA with a major in communication. The junior from Baltimore, Md., finished his first year as the starting goalkeeper for the Demon Deacons with a goals against average of 0.63, which ranks as the second best in school history. Fitzgerald notched 13 shutouts in 2008, tying the school's single-season record for clean sheets in a season.

ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. Maryland's Stephen King was named as the first ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer in 2007.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 GPA for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
