GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest led for the majority of the first half, but the New England Revolution scored two goals in the final five minutes of the opening half and held on for a 2-1 win over the Demon Deacons on Saturday night in front of an overflow crowd of 2,478 fans at Macpherson Stadium in Greensboro. The Deacs struck first in the game, scoring in the 15th minute. Midfielder Corben Bone scored off a free kick from 20 yards out in the middle of the field. His shot went inside the left post to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. Wake Forest dodged several New England scoring chances during the first half. The Revs had numerous corner kicks and shots, but goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald made several nice saves to keep Wake Forest in front. The Revolution evened the game at one with a goal in the 40th minute. Chris Tierney played a pass to Mauricio Castro on the left corner of the field. Castro crossed the ball to the near post. The cross hit a defender and went off the post, before hitting off the back of Fitzgerald and rolling over the line for an own goal to tie the game. New England scored the game-winning goal just two minutes later. Kheli Dube played a pass to former Demon Deacon Wells Thompson. Thompson beat Fitzgerald from eight yards out to give the Revs a 2-1 edge going into the half. Wake Forest had a pair of chances in the second half to equalize the game. The Deacs nearly tied the game in the 64th minute on a shot that went just wide of the upper right corner of the goal. Wake Forest almost evened the game in the 84th minute, but the shot from six yards out sailed over the cross bar. The Demon Deacons are back in action on Saturday, March 21, at 7 p.m., traveling to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., to face the United Soccer League's Carolina RailHawks.
