WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 2-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team kicked off the 2017 season with its first training session on Tuesday morning.

"The guys worked extremely hard and I think we got out of the session what we wanted," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Guys were out here 45 minutes before our first session in an early morning, which is encouraging as a staff...[We have] a lot of new faces, so we just want to see, what are some of these pieces that we're adding to the puzzle?"

Muuss also announced Wake Forest's three captains for the upcoming season: senior defender Kevin Politz, senior midfielder Jon Bakero and senior midfielder Steven Echevarria. That trio has combined to play in 179 career games with 129 total starts.

The Demon Deacons are the reigning ACC regular season and tournament champions, and the national runners-up at the NCAA College Cup. Wake Forest finished the 2016 season with a 19-3-3 overall record.

Wake Forest opens the season with a pair of exhibitions - at Furman on Aug. 13 and at home against UNCW on Aug. 19. The regular season kicks off vs. Rutgers on Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
