GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Sean Okoli has been named the ACC Co-Player of the Week for his performance against NC State on Friday night, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Wake Forest has now had two players earn ACC Player of the Week honors this season. Luca Gimenez also earned the award on October 2 after scoring a hat trick against Virginia Tech on September 28.
A native of Federal Way, Wash., Okoli scored his first-career hat trick in a 3-1 victory over NC State at Spry Stadium. Not only was it his first-career hat trick, but it was also the first time he has scored more than one goal in a game as a Demon Deacon.
With the performance, Okoli leads Wake Forest with eight goals on the season and is tied for second in the ACC. In addition, his five goals in conference play are the most in the league, outdistancing second place by two goals.
Okoli put Wake Forest up 1-0 in the 33rd minute after tapping in a pass at the far post from Gimenez. NC State was able to tie the game less than five minutes into the second half, but Okoli scored twice more to seal the victory.
His second goal came in the 59th minute. Ben Newnam dished out the helper on the second goal after beating several defenders down the left side and finding Okoli at the near post. Okoli then set up his own opportunity for his final goal, dispossessing a Wolfpack defender just outside the 18 and firing the shot past the keeper.
Okoli shared the award with Maryland's Patrick Mullins.
Wake Forest will be back in action tonight for its final regular season road game of the season, as the Deacs travel to Elon at 7 p.m.
