GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore forward Sean Okoli has been named ACC Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
The native of Federal Way, Wash., scored a goal and dished out an assist in Wake Forest's 4-2 win over top-ranked and previously unbeaten Maryland on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.
Okoli also earned the award on October 23 after scoring his first-career hat trick against NC State on October 19. Luca Gimenez also earned the award once this season for Wake Forest, giving the Demon Deacons three winners in the 11 weeks that the award is distributed.
The Demon Deacons went up 1-0 against the Terrapins at 14:00 when Okoli headed home a cross from Collin Martin. After Maryland scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead into the half, he then dished out an assist on Ross Tomaselli's game-tying goal in the 59th minute.
Okoli now leads the team with 10 goals and 22 points, as the assist was his second of the season.
His goal total is just one behind a trio of leaders in the ACC in all games, while his six goals against ACC competition lead the conference and outdistance second place by two goals. Gimenez is one of the players in second place with four goals in conference play.
Okoli was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for his performance against Maryland.
The win gave Wake Forest the No. 3-seed in the ACC Men's Soccer Championship which begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons will host No. 6-seeded Virginia at Spry Stadium. The winner of that game will head to Germantown, Md., at the Maryland Soccerplex to compete in the semifinals on Friday.
