Jan. 22, 2012
ORLANDO, Fla. - The 41st-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis came out strong in doubles and picked up singles wins from David Hopkins, Amogh Prabhakar and Alex Tsai to defeat UCF 4-3 in its first road match of the season in Orlando, Fla.
The Demon Deacons (3-0) set the tone in doubles, with Adam Lee and Danny Kreyman dominating Eugene Dolgovykh and Erik Brunskog 8-1 at the No. 2 position, and David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar cruising past Joe Delinks and Mitch Thams 8-3 at No. 1 to give the Deacs the doubles point. Hopkins and Prabhakar improved their team-best doubles record to 10-2.
Hopkins and Prabhakar were also victorious in singles play. Hopkins took down Brunskog 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2, while Prabhakar gutted out two tough sets against Thams 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Alex Tsai continued to impress in singles, outlasting Clemson transfer Juan Bolona 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles for the deciding point. The match was not as close as the scoreline indicated as two of the Knight's points came in 10-point tiebreaks that were played in lieu of third sets after Wake Forest had already clinched the win.
The Demon Deacons will return to the Sunshine State next weekend when they open against Miami on January 28 in the ITA Kick-off Weekend on the campus of University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
