WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team cruised to a pair of wins Tuesday (Jan. 23) as the Demon Deacons kicked off the 2018 season. The Deacs opened play with a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina before sweeping Elon, 7-0, to conclude action Tuesday.

The team claimed all six doubles matches and the Deacs' 11 singles victories all came in straight sets, with Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer each leading the way with 4-0 records.

Against the Chanticleers (0-1) the Deacs quickly claimed the doubles point before winning five-of-six singles matches. Chrysochos and Botzer were the first off at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-1. Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev clinched the point in the top spot with a 6-2 victory. Playing all matches to completion, Julian Zlobinsky and Ian Dempster, making his Wake Forest debut, claimed the No. 3 decision, 6-3.

Singles was highlighted by a pair of freshmen in Rrezart Cungu and Yuval Solomon. Cungu, a mid-year enrollee who joined the team in January, debuted in the No. 3 spot and earned his first collegiate victory, 6-0, 7-5, over Gonzalez Achondo. Following a successful fall season, Solomon entered the spring ranked No. 83 nationally and picked up his first dual victory with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Juan Castellanos at the No. 6 spot.

The Deacs faced a tough doubles test against Elon (2-2) in the nightcap, as all three doubles teams won by 6-4 margins. Chrysochos and Botzer teamed up once again and were the first off the court at the No. 1 spot. Borna Gojo and Ian Dempster clinched the point at No. 2 and Skander Mansouri and Zlobinsky clinched the sweep at No. 3.

Wake Forest won all six singles matches in straight sets, capping off a nearly perfect opening day.

The Deacs are back in action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27, as the team welcomes Old Dominion, Vanderbilt and Portland to town for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The winner of the four-team tournament will earn a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held in February on the campus of the University of Washington.
