Deacons Take Down No. 33 Miami in 4-3 Thriller

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Danny Kreyman rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third set to post the decisive win at No. 2 singles as the 41st-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team edged No. 33 Miami 4-3 in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday in Gainesville, Fla. The Demon Deacons will face No. 5 Florida tomorrow for a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Wake Forest (4-0) dropped the doubles point and fell behind 3-1 during singles play before Kreyman and Adam Lee pulled out three-set matches to complete the comeback and give the Deacons the win.
Amogh Prabhakar had secured the Deacons' second point with a gutty effort in a tight second set to defeat Wilfredo Gonzalez 6-1, 7-6 (5), leaving Lee and Kreyman on the court in third sets with the Deacons trailing 3-2. Lee jumped out to a 5-2 third-set lead at No. 5 singles and eventually closed out his match against Victor Mauz 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to leave the overall match tied at 3-3.
At the No. 2 spot, No. 115 Kreyman fell down a break 2-4 in the third set to Omar Aly but exploded to take the next four games, winning 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 to secure the Demon Deacon victory.
David Hopkins scored the first point for the Deacons at No. 1 singles with an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Gabriel Flores.
The Deacons dropped the doubles point for the first time all season after the Hurricanes picked up wins at the top two positions. Conner Sherwood and Alex Tsai posted Wake Forest's lone doubles win, sneaking by Santiago Nieto and Victor Mauz 9-8 (3) at the No. 3 spot.
Wake Forest and Florida will face off tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a spot in the National Indoor Championships on the line. The Deacons are looking to advance to the tournament for the first time.
