Feb. 3, 2012
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Danny Kreyman posted the best singles win of his career and Amogh Prabhakar earned his first-career ranked singles victory, but the 39th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped hard-fought matches to No. 41 VCU and No. 30 Notre Dame on Friday.
The Demon Deacons fell 4-2 to the Rams in the first collegiate dual match to be played outdoors at the new Wake Forest Tennis Complex, before moving indoors in a 6-1 loss to the Fighting Irish. Wake Forest now holds a 4-3 record this season.
No. 115 Kreyman's career-best win came in a 6-0, 6-1 dismantling of VCU's No. 47 Max Wennakoski at No. 2 singles, and Prabhakar earned his first ranked win in the nightcap against Notre Dame, downing No. 74 Samuel Keeton 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Despite a win at the No. 1 doubles position by David Hopkins and Prabhakar against VCU, Wake Forest dropped the doubles point to fall into an early hold. Kreyman quickly evened the match at 1-1 with his decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wennakoski at the No. 2 singles position.
After the Rams earned victories at No. 4 and No. 6 to regain their lead at 3-1, David Hopkins finished up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexis Heugas at the No. 1 spot to pull the Deacons within a point at 3-2 However, VCU's Alejandro Argente came from behind to take down Conner Sherwood, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 to clinch the match for the Rams.
Against the Fighting Irish, Wake Forest changed up its doubles lineup, pairing Adam Lee and Alex Tsai at No. 2 and Kreyman and Conner Sherwood at No. 3, but Notre Dame still proved to be too much, sweeping all three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
The Irish won quickly at No. 5 and No. 6 to go ahead 3-0, but the rest of the matches were all close affairs. Casey Watt finally clinched the match for Notre Dame at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over David Hopkins that finished only minutes before Prabhakar finished off his victory over Keeton.
The other two matches split sets, but Notre Dame came out on top in both, as Greg Andrews outlasted Kreyman 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 2 and Blas Moros downed Lee 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6).
The Demon Deacons will return to action next Thursday when they play host to No. 69 South Carolina at 3 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
