No. 23 Michigan Gets Past No. 21 Wake Forest 6-1
Feb. 5, 2011 ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Wake Forest won the doubles point, but Michigan proved to be too much in singles, as the No. 23 Wolverines took down the No. 21 Demon Deacons 6-1 at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor Saturday. Wake falls to 1-2 on the season, dropping below .500 for the first time since 2004, while Michigan improves to 3-2. The Wolverines beat the Deacs for the first time in the last three seasons. The Deacons took an early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. At the No. 3 position, Connor Sherwood saw his first dual match action of the season as he teamed up with Iain Atkinson to post an 8-6 win over Shaun Bernstein and Alex Buzzi. No. 28 Jason Jung and Evan King (Michigan) evened things back up with an 8-5 win over Jonathan Wolff and Danny Kreyman at No. 1, leaving the point to be decided at No. 2. At the middle position, Zach Leslie and David Hopkins got past Chris Cha and Justin Rossi 8-5 to give Wake Forest the point. However, things would not go as smoothly in singles for the Deacs as Michigan swept all six matches to earn the victory, with four of the matches going the full three sets. The Wolverines rallied to take a 2-1 lead with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 5. Rossi put them on the verge of clinching with a three-set win over Hopkins at No. 4, and King claimed the victory for the Wolverines at No. 1, outlasting Wolff 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 for the deciding point. Sophomore Amogh Prabhakar made his dual match singles debut at the No. 6 position, narrowly falling to Chris Cha 5-7, 6-4, 4-6. Kreyman came up just short of a win at No. 3, as he was defeated by Bernstein 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5).
The Demon Deacons will continue their travels in the Great Lakes State with an 11 a.m. match at Michigan State tomorrow. For up-to-the minute Wake Forest tennis news, follow the Deacs on Twitter @WakeTennis or twitter.com/WakeTennis #23 Michigan 6, #21 Wake Forest 1 Singles Doubles Match Notes: |
