Deacs Cage Cardinals 6-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team successfully defended its undefeated 2008 home record with a 6-1 win over the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday. The Demon Deacons are now 7-2 overall and 5-0 at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The loss set the Cardinals back to 8-2 for 2008 dual match action. Senior Mariusz Adamski and freshman Jon Wolff teamed up for the first time in 2008 to open the contest with an 8-6 doubles win over Pablo Calligari and Robert Rotaru at No. 3. Wake Forest's 42nd-ranked duo of Steven Forman and Cory Parr then upset Louisville's No. 23 tandem Austen Childs/David Simon to clinch the doubles point with an 8-6 pro set. Carlos Salmon and Iain Atkinson capped off the WFU doubles sweep with a shortened 7-6 win over Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk at No. 2. After falling behind 3-0 in his first set, Steven Forman rallied to tie the score at 4-4 against Cardinal Simon Childs. Forman continued to build momentum and finished the first set with a 7-5 win and earned the first singles victory for Wake Forest with a 6-4 second set win. Lone freshman Jonathon Wolff put the Demon Deacons up 3-2 when he handed Serbia native Viktor Maksimcuk his first loss of the season, smashing the Cardinal's perfect 9-0 singles record with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Mariusz Adamski clinched the match for the Demon Deacons with a straight set 7-6, 6-2 victory over David Simon. Jason Morgenstern and Iain Atkinson added the final points to the Deacon tally with wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
Wake Forest will continue its seven-match homestand next weekend with March 1 contests vs. Michigan and Davidson beginning at 1 p.m.
