Men's Tennis Falls to Virginia Commonwealth

RICHMOND, Va. - The No. 27 Virginia Commonwealth men's tennis team defeated No. 58 Wake Forest 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va. With the win, the Rams improved to 12-0 on the season, while the Deacons fell to 2-5 overall. No. 72 Jose Sanchez (Alicante, Spain), the top seed, led the Rams as he defeated No. 45 Myles Clouston in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Johan Barras (Versailles, France) and junior Olle Lundberg (Stockholm, Sweden) picked up the other two wins for the Rams in singles play. Barras defeated Michael Berger in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 at the third spot, while Lundberg beat Johan Hansen in two sets 6-2, 6-2 at the fourth position. The Rams sealed the victory in doubles play as they won two of their three matches. Sanchez teamed up with sophomore Frank Moser (Baden-Baden, Germany) to defeat Berger and Brett Mauro of Wake Forest 9-8 at the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 team of Barras and Lundberg added a doubles win to their singles victories as they beat Wake Forest's Hansen and Justin Kaufmann 8-4. Virginia Commonwealth returns to action at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on Monday, March 8 against 50th-ranked Georgia Tech at 1:00 p.m.
