COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the No. 22 Wake Forest men's tennis team was unable to fend off No. 20 Texas A&M in College Station, suffering a 4-3 loss in the late night match.
The loss stalls the 2008 Demon Deacon record at 9-4, while Texas A&M now stands at 7-4. Wake Forest will look to rebound at its final spring break match against No. 27 Texas Christian on Friday.
Cory Parr and Steve Forman teamed up for the first win of the night, taking an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Mariusz Adamski and Jon Wolff followed with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 to give WFU an 1-0 advantage.
Wake Forest sophomore Jason Morgenstern fired out a 6-0, 6-0 win over Stephen Shields at No. 6, but Demon Deacon losses at Nos. 1 and 4 evened the match score at 2-2.
Steve Forman captured his ninth consecutive singles win to give the Deacons a 3-2 edge, with a 6-7 (0), 6-4, 6-4 win over Austin Krajicek. Will Spencer then outlasted Wake senior Mariusz Adamski at No. 3 with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win to knot the score at 3-3.
For the second consecutive contest, the clinching match fell at the feet of WFU junior Carlos Salmon. In the conference opener against NC State last Wednesday, Salmon saved four match points to defeat his Wolfpack counterpart 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 and nail the 4-3 Deacon win.
On Tuesday night Aggie Matt Bain was the victor in the extremely tight matchup, defeating Salmon 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5.
