ATHENS, Ga. – The Wake Forest men’s tennis team survived a scare in its first match as the No. 1 team in the country Friday, as the Demon Deacons held off No. 12 Georgia, 4-3, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Deacs (14-1) stumbled out of the gate, dropping the doubles point. After the duo of Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky fell on court 3, the top two courts would go to a tiebreaker to decide the point. Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim pushed their match at No. 1 doubles into extra points, but fell short in the tiebreaker, 8-6. Wake Forest’s No. 2 doubles team of Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev saw their match go unfinished with the doubles point in hand for Georgia (8-6).

Wake Forest responded in singles action, quickly picking up a pair of victories to move ahead, 2-1. Chrysochos, ranked second nationally, swiftly defeated No. 26 Wayne Montgomery, 6-2, 6-2 in the top spot. Mansouri claimed a point for the Deacs on court 3 shortly thereafter, as the fifth-ranked junior defeated No. 99 Nathan Ponwith, 6-4, 6-2.

The Bulldogs responded on court 4 to even the match at 2-all as Christian Seraphim fell in straight sets. Gadjiev put the Deacs within a point of victory in the No. 6 slot with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Uspensky was pushed to three sets in the No. 5 position after taking the first set, 6-3. In the end, Uspensky would fall, sending the fate of the match to the No. 2 singles court between Gojo, ranked 76th nationally and No. 46 Emil Reinberg.

Gojo opened his match with a 6-3 victory in the opening set before moving to a tiebreaker in the second set. The freshman jumped out to an early led but couldn’t hold on, falling 8-6 in the tiebreaker to force a third and decisive set for the match. The two opponents battled back and forth before Gojo took a late 5-4 lead. He then broke Reinberg in the final service game to clinch the 4-3 decision for Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons return home for a midweek match against Virginia Tech on Tuesday, March 21. First serve is set for 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
