March 19, 2008
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Steve Forman posted upsets at No. 1 doubles and singles, but the 29th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team fell short of upending the 13th-ranked Tar Heels with a 4-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons now stand at 9-6, 1-1 for the season while North Carolina is 11-3 and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
With a decisive 8-3 upset over UNC's fourth-ranked Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney at No. 1 doubles, Steve Forman and Cory Parr improved to 10-4 for 2008 and are 9-1 through their last ten matchups.
Forman also posted a singles upset, defeating No. 78 Stefan Hardy at No. 1 with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Demon Deacon sophomore is now 11-3 in dual matches and holds a 4-1 record playing at the top of WFU singles lineup.
59th-ranked Cory Parr held a 6-1, 5-4 advantage over UNC's No. 112 Benjamin Carlotti at No. 2, when the North Carolina senior retired from the match to give Parr the automatic win. It was Wake's second singles win of the night, but losses from Deacons at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 had already sealed the North Carolina victory.
WFU sophomore Jason Morgenstern had the first win of the evening, taking a victory over Will Plyler in a super tiebreaker.
The Demon Deacons will forge ahead in ACC play this weekend as they host Maryland on Friday at 1 p.m. and Boston College on Saturday at 10 a.m. The BC match will be followed by a 4 p.m. contest with Elon.
