South Carolina Trips Deacons 4-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. - It came down to the third set in the last singles match but the No. 18 Wake Forest men's tennis team was unable to pull out a win and fell 4-3 at No. 19 South Carolina on Thursday afternoon. The Demon Deacons (9-5) started the doubles round by splitting matches at Nos. 2 and 3. Iain Atkinson and Jason Morgenstern fell 8-5 to Jaime Cuellar/Johannes Pulsfort at No. 3, but David Hopkins and Jon Wolff fired back with an 8-5 win at No. 2 to even play. Cory Parr and Steven Forman then dropped a tough 8-9 (5) tiebreaker at No. 1 and the Gamecocks (13-3) pulled ahead 1-0. Sophomore Jonathan Wolff tied the match at 1-all with a straight set win over Jamie Cuellar and Steven Forman pushed the Deacons forward with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 115 Pedro Campos at No. 2. Iain Atkinson and Andrew Brasseaux fell at Nos. 4 and 5 and the Gamecocks were back in front with a 3-2 advantage. No. 26 Cory Parr faced No. 50 Diego Cubas at No. 1. Cubas posted a 6-3 win in the first set but Parr fought back and took Cubas to a tiebreaker in the second set. Parr won the breaker 7-3 to split sets. Parr won the final set 6-3 to tie the overall score at 3-3. The deciding match fell at No. 6 where Wake Forest freshman David Hopkins battled sophomore Johannes Pulsfort. Pulsfort chased Hopkins through the first set but Hopkins came out on top with a 7-6 (5) win. Pulsfort decisively won the second set 6-2 and was able to take a 6-4 win in the final set to clinch the South Carolina victory.
Wake Forest will head directly to College Park to face Maryland on Friday at 3 p.m. and will follow with a double-header against Brown and Boston College on Sunday. Results South Carolina 4, Wake Forest 3
