Senior Derrick Spice knocked off the nation's eighth-ranked player, Virginia's Doug Stewart, in straight sets but it wasn't enough as the third-ranked Cavaliers defeated the Demon Deacons, 6-1, at the Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

It was Wake Forest's third straight loss, dropping the team's record to 11-4 overall, 3-2 ACC. Virginia remained unbeaten in the league at 4-0 and improved to 16-2 on the year.

"Today, we played better collectively than we have our last couple matches. We were close in doubles and that's a positive sign," head coach Jeff Zinn said. "There's a reason Virginia is ranked third in the country."

The Deacons shook up the doubles teams on Sunday and it paid off at No. 2 doubles where Marius Adamski and Todd Paul earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory. Andrew Hamar and Brett Ross squared off against the Virginia's top-seeded and 41st-ranked doubles team of Rylen Rizza and Todd Meythaler. Hamar and Ross were tied at five games each before Virginia pulled away to win 8-5.

In singles, Virginia won the first set in all matches except at No. 1 where Spice won in a tiebreaker. Spice went on to defeat Stewart in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2. The victory over the eighth-ranked player matched the best victory of Spice's career. Interestingly enough, Spice beat Stewart last year in Charlottesville when Stewart was ranked eighth.

In other singles action, Deacon sophomore Todd Paul pushed 56th-ranked Rylan Rizza to three sets before falling 7-5 in the final set.

Virginia won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.

Wake Forest will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against #14 Clemson at Leighton Tennis Stadium.
