No. 25 Deacons Stop North Carolina 4-2
April 8, 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Cory Parr and Jonathan Wolff each earned their 25th singles wins of the season as the 25th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team topped North Carolina 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Demon Deacons are now 17-7 in dual matches and 7-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC is 14-8 and 3-6.
The Deacons earned their third consecutive doubles point to kickoff the match. North Carolina's Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman defeated Cory Parr and Steven Forman 8-6 at No.1, but Wake's Iain Atkinson/Carlos Salmon duo downed UNC competitors 8-5 at No. 2 and Jonathan Wolff/David Hopkins took an 8-6 win at No. 3.
The close doubles matches would mirror the singles portion of the contest, where every court held close matches with long points.
Cory Parr jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Donato came back to tie and pull ahead 5-4 at No.1. Parr stayed close and was able to challenge Donato in a tiebreaker and post a 7-3 win. Parr followed with a 6-3 victory in the second set to put Wake Forest ahead 2-0.
Jonathan Wolff played the longest first set of the match, taking on Brennan Boyajian at No. 3. The lead swapped several times before Wolff landed the 7-5 win. The lengthy first set seemed to zap the mojo right out of Boyajian and Wolff didn't lower his intensity. Wolff was the second Deacon to finish with a 7-5, 6-1 win.
David Hopkins clinched the WFU win with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Andrew Crone at No. 4.
Wake Forest will finish the regular season this weekend, hosting No. 1 Virginia on Friday at 2:30 and Virginia Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m.
