WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Cory Parr took down 17th-ranked Dominic Inglot at No. 1 singles in a three-set thriller, but the Wake Forest men's tennis team fell short against top-ranked Virginia, 6-1. Wake Forest will finish the regular season on Saturday, hosting Virginia Tech at 2:30.
UVA took the doubles point with wins at all three matches. Cory Parr and Steve Forman played an even match with 14th-ranked Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz. The UVA duo broke the Deacons late in the match to take an 8-6 win. Jonathan Wolff and David Hopkins also fell 8-6 at No. 3.
Virginia raced forward in singles taking straight set wins at 2, 3, 5, and 6. David Hopkins played out marathon points with 75th-ranked Houston Barrick at No. 4. After a close 7-5 tiebreaker in the first set, the competitors started the second set as other matches were wrapping up. Barrick took the tiebreaker win and followed through with a 6-0 victory in the second set.
Cory Parr was the only Deacon to take a first set win, challenging Inglot to a tiebreaker. Inglot, the senior from London who has one of the most powerful serves amongst current college tennis players, took the second set 6-3. The competitors played a super tiebreaker to decide the final set. Cory Parr jumped out to an early lead, but Inglot tied the match at 10-all. Parr pulled off back-to-back points to take a 12-10 win.
