CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The top-ranked Wake Forest men’s tennis team capped off the road portion of its regular season schedule with a 6-1 victory over No. 49 Virginia Sunday (April 15) afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Sunday’s win marked the first time since 2002 that the Demon Deacons (20-2, 9-1 ACC) had won in Charlottesville, snapping an eight-match losing streak.

The Deacs claimed victories at the final two doubles position to take the opening point from Virginia (12-10, 5-6 ACC). After the Cavaliers took a 6-1 decision on the top court, Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev countered with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot. The 60th-ranked duo of Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos upended the 27th-ranked tandem from Virginia on Court 2, 6-4, to seal the point in favor of the Deacs.

Wake Forest quickly extended the lead to 2-0 as Rrezart Cungu won at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-2, marking the freshman’s seventh consecutive victory including his Davis Cup participation.

The Demon Deacons added another point when Skander Mansouri claimed a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles. Chrysochos clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over 28th-ranked Aswin Lizen. The junior from Larnaca, Cyprus has now won 15 consecutive matches, all in straight sets, including 10 against ranked opponents.

Botzer rallied from a first-set defeat to pick up the fifth point of the day with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at N. 4 singles. After the Cavaliers claimed their lone point at the No. 5 position, Gojo closed out the match with a 10-8 victory in a third-set superbreaker over No. 31 Carl Soderlund.
