April 18, 2010
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The regular season concluded on a high note for the Wake Forest men's tennis team as they took down Boston College on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-1 at Leighton Stadium. The Demon Deacons improve their record to 13-8 (7-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) on the season, while Maryland drops to 13-12 (1-10 ACC).
Juniors Jonathan Wolff and Iain Atkinson teamed up at the top doubles position for the second time in as many matches to earn an 8-5 victory over Maryland's Ian Mansfield and Graham Knowlton. Maryland then went on to claim victories at the second and third spots in order to earn the overall doubles point.
A brief recognition ceremony honoring the seniors occurred between the doubles and singles action. Coach Jeff Zinn gave his highest regards to the graduating class, and each senior was presented with a ring to mark the occasion.
Following the ceremony, the Deacs returned to the court to claim all six singles victories on the afternoon. Playing in the top singles position, No. 23 Steven Forman finished first with a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Maryland's John Collins. Forman now owns a record of 22-9 on the season, including an 8-2 mark in league play.
Freshman Danny Kreyman followed close behind Forman with a 6-4, 6-2 victory of his own against Ryan Lissner. Kreyman stands at 20-9 on the season with a 7-4 mark against ACC opponents. Jonathan Wolff posted a 6-4 first set victory over Jesse Kiuru before dropping the second set by a score of 6-3. The two battled back and forth in the third set, but Wolff ultimately came out on top with a 6-3 victory to claim the match point.
The decisive match of the day came at the number three singles position, as No. 106 Iain Atkinson defeated Maryland's Tommy Laine in three sets. Atkinson claimed a 6-2 first set victory, but then dropped a 6-4 decision in the second set. He remained in control throughout much of the third set and was able to post a 6-3 victory that sealed the overall victory for the Demon Deacons.
Freshman Tripper Carleton also saw his match extend to three sets, as he posted a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Sergio Wyss. The final singles point of the day came at the number six position from fellow freshman Zach Leslie. Leslie defeated Graham Knowlton in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Sunday's match marked the final home contest for four Wake Forest seniors that will graduate as the most decorated class in school history. Headlining the class of 2010 is Steven Forman, who is a two-time All-ACC and All-America honoree. Forman ranks second in Wake Forest history with 98 doubles victories, and eighth on the charts with 89 singles victories. In 2008, Forman partnered with former teammate Cory Parr to claim Wake Forest's first ever men's national tennis championship in the doubles title match of the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Jason Morgenstern also played in the final home match of his career on Sunday afternoon. He has recorded victories in 27 doubles matches throughout his four years at Wake Forest, and he led the team in his sophomore campaign with eight singles victories against ACC opponents. Morgenstern was also the only freshman on the squad in 2006 to qualify for the main draw at the ITA Mideast Regional Tournament.
Joining Forman and Morgenstern in the graduating class is Carlos Salmon, a doubles specialist who has won 37 matches in three seasons after transferring from Southern California. Salmon was ranked as high as No. 44 in doubles play in the 2008 with former teammate Mariusz Adamski.
The fourth and final member of the 2010 class is Andrew Brasseaux, a four-year letterwinner who recorded victories in 30 singles matches while at Wake Forest. He played with nine different doubles partners during his career, and he notched victories in 25 of these doubles matches.
Wake Forest will now begin preparing for the ACC Championships, which will take place April 22nd-25th in Cary, N.C. Stay tuned to wakeforestsports.com for specific match details.
