Men's Tennis Falls In NCAA Second Round
May 15, 2005
Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 17th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Sunday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas, with a 4-1 loss to 15th-ranked Texas Tech in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Demon Deacon junior Brett Ross captured the team's only point with a straight set singles win at No. 4 against Esat Tanik, 6-1, 6-4.
Wake Forest lost the doubles point and did not recover well in singles, dropping the first set in four of the six singles matches.
"I thought we hurt ourselves a little bit in the doubles. We thought we could win that," head coach Jeff Zinn said. "The middle of our lineup did not play that well. That is where our strength has been all year. That was disappointing. I thought we would play a little better there. You have to give credit to Texas Tech, they made us look bad today."
Wake Forest was competing well at the top of the singles lineup where Derrick Spice won the first set and Todd Paul had rallied to force a third set. But those matches were not completed as Texas Tech won in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.
The Deacons end their season with a 17-7 record while Texas Tech moves on to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Wake Forest matched its best ever NCAA Tournament performance by reaching the second round. The team's 17 wins were the most since 2002 and the fourth-most in school history. Only the 1986, 1980 and 1976 Deacon teams posted most victories.
Although Wake Forest's season ends as a team, the team's lone senior, Derrick Spice, will have the opportunity to compete in next week's NCAA Singles Tournament in College Station, Texas. The bracket will be released next week.
