Forman and Atkinson Advance to NCAA Doubles Round of 16
May 27, 2010
ATHENS, Ga. - The Wake Forest doubles team of Steven Forman and Iain Atkinson advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championship with a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-6(2) victory over Fresno State's Remi Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
The match was a battle of big servers, and breaks were hard to come by. Neither team could break serve in the first set, sending it to a tiebreak. Forman and Atkinson jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on to take the tiebreak 7-4.
The second set would be just as close. Boutillier and de Villiers got an early break to take a 4-2 lead. De Villiers served for the second set at 5-4, but the Deacons broke at love to even the match at 5-5. Both teams held serve, sending the set to another tiebreak. A nice reflex volley by Atkinson gave the Deacs an early mini-break, and they cruised to a 7-2 tiebreak victory to clinch the match.
The pair will be back in action tomorrow against Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan of Ohio State, who are in the group of players seeded 5th-8th.
Forman will be looking to reach the NCAA Doubles quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, having reached the round of eight with former partner Cory Parr ('09) in 2008 and 2009.
