Billa and Tsai Join Men's Tennis For 2012 Season

Jan. 10, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshmen Jaya Billa and Alex Tsai have enrolled at Wake Forest and will join the men's tennis team for the 2012 dual match season, head coach Tony Bresky announced today.

Billa, from Folsom, Calif., and Tsai, from Binghamton, N.Y., will provide needed depth for the Demon Deacons as they kick off the 2012 season with a home doubleheader against Charlotte and Furman on Sunday, January 15. The two are the first Bresky recruits to join the team after he took over as head coach in September.

"I'm very excited to have Alex and Jaya joining us this season," said Bresky. "They are going to establish the work ethic and ambition that we're looking for in our recruits. I know them and their families well, and they are good, well-rounded individuals. I think they are going to make a big impact."

Billa, who was rated a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network, earned the No. 1 ranking in Northern California Section in the 16 and under division and was ranked No. 2 in the 18 and unders. He played a Folsom High School and helped lead the team for the first-place league finish in 2009.

"Jaya is a strong, athletic kid from California who has a lot of potential," said Bresky. "He is very young, but is an enthusiastic and exciting player with big upside. I'm looking for him to make immediate contributions."

Tsai played on the Binghamton High School tennis team for six years, starting in the seventh grade, and played No. 1 singles his final five seasons. He competed in the New York State Public High School Singles Championships every year from 2007-11 and also won a gold medal at the 2010 Empire State Games while representing the Central Region.

"Alex is a player who has improved a lot," said Bresky. "He is a super hard-worker who hasn't had great training opportunities, so I think that he is going to make strides here at Wake Forest. I think he will also be able to contribute immediately."
