Jan. 17, 2012
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's David Hopkins has been named ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles to help lead the Demon Deacons to wins over Furman and Charlotte in their opening matches of the 2012 season. Hopkins shared the player of the week honors with NC State's Jaime Pulgar.
Hopkins teamed with Amogh Prabhakar at No. 1 doubles in both matches, topping Furman's Jacob Behal and Andrew Mellow 8-4, and Charlotte's Alex Calott and Jack Williams 8-3.
The Winston-Salem-native led the Deacon singles lineup against the 49ers, earning the clinching point at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williams. Hopkins played No. 2 singles against the Paladins, defeating Joel Cook 6-4, 6-1.
Helped by Hopkins' play, Wake Forest shut out Furman 7-0 and took down Charlotte by a 6-1 scoreline. The Deacons' lone senion has been one of the most consistent players on the squad this season, posting a 10-5 singles record and 9-2 doubles mark.
The Deacs will hit the road for the first time this weekend when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to face UCF on Sunday at 11 a.m.
