Zlobinsky Advances at Cary Challenger

CARY, N.C. – Redshirt junior Julian Zlobinsky advanced to the second round of the Cary Challenger Wednesday (Sept. 13) afternoon with a three-set victory over Alexis Galarneau.

In his first competition for the Demon Deacons since transferring from the University of Texas this past offseason, Zlobinsky drew Galarneau, a member of the NC State men’s tennis team, in the opening round of the main draw.

Zlobinsky jumped out to an early advantage with a 6-4 victory in the opening set, but was pushed to a decisive third set after Galaneau took the second set, 7-5. In the end, Zlobinsky prevailed with the 7-5 decision in the third to advance to the Round of 16. In a match that went down to the wire, Zlobinksy’s serve proved to be the difference, as the Deac served up 13 aces compared to the six for Galarneau.

In the Round of 16, Zlobinsky will face Marcelo Arevalo, who was up 5-2 against No. 3 seed Michael Mmoh in the opening set when Mmoh was forced to retire. Arevalo entered the tournament ranked No. 219 in the world.

Skander Mansouri’s run at the Cary Challenger came to an end in the opening round of the main draw as he fell to Joao Pedro Sorgi, 6-4, 6-3.

Former Demon Deacon Noah Rubin, the No. 6 seed in the field, opened his main draw run with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pedro Sakamoto and will face Sorgi in the next round.
