BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Tom Morrison finished second out of 19 runners in the men's mile run to lead the Wake Forest men's and women's track & field team on the second day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet at Rector Field House. Morrison crossed the line in a time of 4:10.72, which was just over a second and a half behind the race winner Ryley Miller of Georgia. In the women's 200-meter invite, junior Nicole Castronuova turned in a solid time of 24.39 to finish third overall. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Brent LaRue, Tyler Dodds, Jon Reid and Michael Bingham ran a season-best 3:11.07 to finish first by more than two seconds. The team's time was just 27 hundredths of a second shy of an NCAA provisional mark. The women's 4x400-meter relay team also turned in a season-best time of 3:46.44, which was over seven seconds faster than their previous season-best and less than one second behind the school record of 3:45.56. The team of Alex Gove, Castronuova, Kim Vos, and Caroline Vaughn finished third overall in the open race. Wake had a total of five athletes compete in the women's mile run and the top Deacon finisher was Dina Nosenko in a time of 4:57.24 to grab fourth. Freshman Laura Rapp crossed the line in 13th with a time of 5:08.44 while Cate Berenato and Merry Placer finished side-by-side in 5:10.08 and 5:10.17. Catlin Crawford was the final Deac to finish at 5:18.95.
In the men's open 400-meter race, sophomore Allan Lunkenheimer finished second with a time of 48.95 while Alex Hill took ninth in 50.03. The shot put also saw a couple of good performances as freshman Sarah Brobeck finished seventh on the women's side with a personal-best mark of 36-10.25. On the men's side, Thomas Sensing took sixth with a toss of 51-06.25 while freshman Michael Wooten turned in a mark of 40-10.25. The team will be back in action next Saturday at the Virginia-Penn-Columbia-Lehigh Meet in New York, N.Y. The Deacs will then head back to Blacksburg the following weekend for the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 20-21 in preparation for the ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg on Feb. 26-28. |
