| ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest track and field team headed to Blacksburg, Virginia this weekend and laced up for the ACC Championships. The three day event is taking place at the Rector Field House, a venue the Deacons have already competed in three times this season. Through the first two days of competition, the Deacons saw several athletes qualify for the final rounds taking place tomorrow as well as some top finishes in final events today.
Nyki Caldwell exploded for a second place finish in the high jump as the Michigan native bested her previous personal record with a leap of 1.78m. Caldwell fell just .03m short of former Deacon Trina Bindel's school record that has remained unbroken since 1995.This top finish is no surprise as Caldwell has been a top five finisher in four of her five meets this season.
Sydney White, who has broken the school pole vaulting record on numerous occasions this season, placed fifth overall with a 3.87m vault. This performance marks the freshman's fifth vault of 3.50m or better in a row as well as the best of her career as a Demon Deacon.
On the men's side, Anthony Marois, Alexander Rose, Kyle Eager, and Harrison teamed up to earn another seventh place finish for the Deacons in the distance medley relay. The four posted a time of 9:54.86 representing the fastest of any Wake Forest team this season.
Women's Pentathlon
Erika Martin competed in the pentathlon on Thursday and placed 11th overall. The junior was among the top finishers in multiple events, including the 60m hurdles (9.13) and shot put (9.92m). Her performances in shot put, as well as high jump (1.53m), were good enough for new personal bests.
Women's Long Jump
After finishing second in her heat, Montasia Golden was the top performing Deacon as she locked up a 12th place finish with a jump of 5.71m. The sophomore came within 0.4 meters of her personal best. Senior Erin Brooks placed 15th with a 5.58m performance.
Women's 5,000m Run
Kathleen Darling was the lone Deacon competing as the freshman's time of 17:18.99 earned a 15th place finish.
Women's Distance Medley
In the women's distance medley, senior Myesha Barr led a team that included three freshman teammates Samantha Jones, Kendal Knous, and Ashley Brubaker to a seventh place finish. The four wrapped up their first competition as a team after Brubaker crossed the finish line at the 11:54.23 mark.
Men's 400m Prelims
Daniel Harrison broke his previous personal best record as he posted the eighth best time of the event (48.39) and qualified to run in the finals tomorrow. The Virginia native managed to shave over 0.4 seconds off of his previous personal best as his impressive sophomore season continues.
Men's 800m Prelims
Junior Thomas Bojanowski also recorded a new personal best as his time of 1:51.44 reserved his place in the finals tomorrow. Bojanowski is yet to place outside of the top eight this season in any of his six performances.
Men's Weight Throw
Nate Wooten's toss for 16.33m earned a ninth place finish.
The women's team heads into tomorrow in eighth place with while the men's team stands at 11th. Competition resumes Saturday Feb. 22 at 11 a.m.
