May 29, 2009 Meet Website | Live Results | Day 1 Results GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Thomas Sensing qualified for his first NCAA Championship with a fifth-place finish in the javelin throw Friday afternoon at the NCAA East Regionals at the NC A&T's Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro. Sensing had a toss of 207-05 (63.23m) in his first attempt of the event and that mark held-up through the rest of his heat as well as through the finals. Sensing also competed in the shot put Friday evening but didn't find the same fortune as his first toss of 52-01.00 was followed by a pair of fouls. He finished 28th in the event. "Thomas didn't have his best throw in the javelin today but nobody really did," said Wake Forest assistant coach Scott Hall. "He had a good opportunity to advance to the championships today and he took advantage of that. Overall, it was a good performance." Sensing will finish off his weekend by competing in the finals of the men's discus Saturday evening. Senior Michael Bingham won his heat in the 400-meter prelims by almost a full second and cruised into the finals with a time of 46.19. Bingham, who missed all of last season as he trained for and competed in the 2008 Olympics, is looking to become the NCAA's top 400-meter runner this season as he also won the NCAA Indoor 400-meter national title this past March. He will take the fourth-best qualifying time into Saturday's finals, which will start at 6:20 pm. Junior Jon Reid also competed in the men's 400-meter prelims Friday night. He finished second in his heat with a time of 46.99 but wound up with the 13th best time and did not advance to the finals. In the women's 400-meter dash prelims, senior Melissa Council ran a strong 53.68 and advanced to the finals with the fifth-best time. Council was second in her heat and her time was just .06 seconds off her school-record time.
Junior Caroline Vaughn competed in the prelims of both hurdle races Friday evening. In the 400-meter hurdle race, she turned in a strong time of 58.64 to finish second in her heat. She moves into Saturday's final with the fifth-best time overall. In the 100-meter hurdle race, Vaughn ran a time of 13.68 but finished 11th overall in the field and only eight competitors moved on to the finals. Alex Gove also competed in the prelims of the women's 400-meter hurdle race and ran a personal-best time of 1:00.10 but was third in her heat and 15th overall. Sophomore Anna Nosenko finished seventh of the 39-runners in the finals of the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:18.41. She entered the event with a personal-best time of 16:09.05 which she ran at the Oregon Twilight Meet two weeks ago. Anna's sister Dina Nosenko competed in the women's 1,500-meter prelims Friday afternoon and ran a time of 4:25.44 and finished fourth in her heat. Unfortunately, only the top-three finishers in each heat as well as the next three fastest times made the finals. Nosenko had the fourth-best time outside of the top-3 finishers. Senior Phillip Warsaw had a tough run in the prelims of the men's 400-meter hurdle race and finished with a time of 55.50. Kim Vos got to the NCAA East Regionals with an 800-meter time of 2:09.56 which she ran at the Georgia Tech Invitational two weeks ago. On Friday, she finished fifth in her qualifying heat with a time of 2:11.90 and finished with the 17th best time overall. Bingham, Council and Vaughn will all try to join Sensing at the 2009 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on June 10-13. Saturday's track finals are set to begin at 5:00 pm while Sensing will compete in the finals of the men's discus which will also start at 5:00 pm. |
