Bingham Named ACC Indoor Men's Track Performer of the Year
March 6, 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Michael Bingham has been named the 2009 ACC Indoor Men's Track Performer of the Year according to voting conducted by the conference's 12 head coaches.
Last weekend, Bingham shined at the ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg, bringing home gold both in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay team.
He cruised through the prelims of the 400-meter dash with the top qualifying mark and then hopped out to the lead early in the finals and never relinquished it, turning in a blazing time of 46.23. That time not only bettered his NCAA provisional mark, but it is currently the fifth-best time in the country this season.
Bingham later returned to run the anchor leg for the 4x400-meter relay team. When he received the baton, he was about 10-meters behind Javier Garcia Tunon of Florida State. He steadily closed the gap over the first 200-meters and had caught Tunon with 100-meters to go. After a little bump, Bingham burst to the outside and overtook Tunon down the final straightaway for just Wake's second indoor 4x400-meter ACC title.
The Burlington, N.C., native started the season with a bang, running a school-record 1:03.09 to take first in the 500-meter dash at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 9. It was his first competition for the Deacons since returning from last summer's Beijing Olympics, where he helped Great Britain's 4x400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish.
Bingham is a two-time All-American in the 400-meter dash and is now an 11-time All-ACC honoree. He also holds the school-record in five indoor events and three outdoor events. This was his first time earning ACC Indoor Track Performer of the Year honors.
Next up for Bingham will be a trip to College Station, Texas, next weekend for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. As mentioned, Bingham has the fifth-best time in the 400-meter dash this season and will be seeking to become the Deacs' first men's NCAA Indoor Champion.
