Demon Deacons Race to Second at Raleigh Invitational

CARY, N.C. -- All five Wake Forest competitors finished in the top 20, as the Demon Deacons raced to a second-place finish at the Raleigh Invitational on a rainy Friday afternoon at the SAS Complex. Freshman Keaton Morgan led the Deacons with a sixth-place finish out of 84 runners. Morgan, who finished the 5k race in a time of 16:00, was the first non-NC State runner to cross the finish line. The host Wolfpack swept the top five places to win the meet with the minimum 15 points. Senior John Compton also turned in a top-10 performance for the Deacs, placing eighth in 16:13. Junior Jeremy Fisico finished in 13th place for the second consecutive meet. Fisico ran a 16:41 for the Deacons. Redshirt freshman Patrick Russell was the fourth Deacon to finish, as he placed 17th in 16:56. Senior Chris Catton rounded out Wake Forest's five. Catton ran a 17:03 to finish in 19th place. Wake Forest took second out of 11 teams with 63 points, easily out-distancing East Carolina who placed third with 118 points. NC State's John Martinez won the race with a time of 15:08. The Deacs are off next weekend before returning to action at the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 29 in Louisville, Ky.
